Puss in Boots (Puss In Boots), an opera by Xavier Montsalvatge
Only occasionally – in fact quite rare these days – something quite amazing arises from an evening in a concert hall. Nearly forty years on an interest in music that includes all styles of Western music Gothic Minimalism (perhaps not a big leap!), real surprises are rare and usually occur only in the audience of a work of a young composer, someone beginning to find a voice. But Xavier Montsalvatge died at ninety, in 2002, after a life more than the most active as a composer, but few outside his hometown of Catalonia were familiar with his music. Since his arrival in Spain, I actively sought programs that involved more and more popular and their results have been impressed by the eclecticism of his style, often neo-classical, but often mixed with folk songs, folk songs and jazz, and sometimes give more than a hint of hardness Bartokian. But none of the work for piano and string pieces I've heard so far, could have prepared me for the experience that was the opera Montsalvatge, Puss In Boots, Puss in Boots.
Obviously, a children's opera with a text by Charles Perrault, who closely follows the familiar version of the pantomime of history know that the first rhythmic figures String, with its changing harmonies and keys ambiguous experience a work that exists simultaneously at different levels, similar in some aspects of Janacek Cunning Little Vixen, but lighter in its touch, Miro Dadd Janacek.
The work lasts only an hour and five scenes. In the first of our Jack is resting on a mattress in front television, occasionally offering his spandex with bells suspended in the languid lines to the audience. The children were captivated from beginning to end, fascinated by this beautiful cozy, elegant and exciting represented and sung by Marisa Martins. Wider audience members could be other things in mind, this is the kind of pantomime. In this first scene brightness again, high heels and pointy boots are made with a layer to highlight the color pink. The king and the princess bemoan the state realm. Apparently, is a boring life when there is war or civil strife. Husbands are not there, it seems. Chat with boots appears and was hired. The miller was a suitor for the princess, tapes of his shorts and take a bath in the river and was immediately in difficulty. Jack asks his loyal White rabbits, who until now as a ballet offers furniture and accessories reordered list of nursery. Snorkels and goggles and rescue the child. The king was overjoyed and the eyes of the princess is considered a bite. And then the ogre seems things even a little rough. In his den, he deplores the fact that the good life could have done the nose the color of an eggplant. Chat about anything, of course, avoiding the lion where it becomes strange, then the canary is courting his next turn and, finally, of course, treat (offstage) with orange-controlled mouse radio was the way she asked him to take. What all the ogres so stupid? Anyway, is not marriage and clearly they all live happily ever after, including cat that comes with your TV back.
While the story. It is pantomime, but it does very well and is full of wonderful images. Martins Marisa as chatting is quite remarkable on paper. She has the use of a dancer with the body next to the expressions and gestures that seem to flirt interpretation bring to the music rather than follow. And has the undeniable talent to sing beautifully and seemingly effortless act together. Enric Martinez-Castignani King gives an excellent picture of a clumsy idiot whose deafness can be hidden wisdom. Miguel Zapater, as the ogre is remarkable. It becomes a real pantomime character who admits he had a few glasses of wine, too. Maria Luz matrine Princess wins the apparent naivety of the character with aplomb and her voice shines in a role that must bear the weight of the images a wedding dress in pure white tight red balls bright. How's that for subtlety? And if David Menendez was stripped of his trunks to swim in the river in a most elegant opera house, no doubt part of the audience have called for a deviation of the eye constantly trained on red shell. His role-playing game is a wonderful mixture of clown and suitor and his singing was excellent.
But behind all this was the music, which was brilliantly expressive, a mixture of recitative deceptive simplicity eclectic, inventive sets and orchestra. The trombone tuba and figures that accompanied the ogre has a touch of genius. Recitatives have been superbly cast as not quite Mozart, while the neo-classicism was still digging through interesting harmonic changes. And there was always the suspicion that once a cat's paw in the strings that will allow us to draw all the pus with this fun film of the hand and wrist. In the pit of the World Youth Orchestra played perfectly and Vincent Joseph, who is without doubt one of the brightest young drivers and attained, is certainly intended on recognition around the world.
It was the music and the performance of the highest standards – and all this happens in more sophisticated small town La Nucia, just outside of Benidorm. What a wonderful place to live!
