Cat Costume Unitard

I need to be able to do splits and over-splits by October? HELP?
The ballet company I’m in, is doing an “Alice in Wonderland” inspired ballet, and I’m trying out for two parts (The auditions are in OCTOBER!! DX) – The Cheshire Cat, and the White Rabbit. The White Rabbit, I’m not really that into, but I want to get the Cheshire Cat Part SO BADLY! My teacher (who’s hosting the auditions) says I would be perfect for the part, except for two things: I need to be more flexible, and I need to lose a little weight because the costume is a unitard. Right now, I’m 170 lbs, and I KNOW I need to drop weight, but what can I do to get more flexible? I WANT THIS PART SO BADLY! PLEASE HELP!
* First off – stretching should NEVER hurt. If it hurts it means you are doing damage to your muscles.
* Only ever stretch to the point of “mild tension” – back off a bit if you feel pain.
* Do not bounce when you stretch – the right way to stretch is slow and relaxed. Make sure you breath naturally and don’t hold your breath.
* Hold each stretch 20 – 30 seconds. Rest for 15 seconds, then stretch again. Repeat 3 times, each time try to stretch a little bit further.
There are heaps of resources for dancers – I’ve listed them below for you.
I’m a kick boxer and use a “Stretchaflex” – it’s designed for martial artists, however it is great for anyone who wants to do the splits. You will see ballet dancers use them too. It’s a little expensive but worth it if you can afford it.
Another great way to get flexible is to join a yoga class.
Stretch everyday and you will get there – good luck with your auditions in October!
