Is letting the children that come to our home for halloween candy pet our 8 week old puppy to much stimulation?
I don’t want to put too much pressure on him, but I want him to be good with children.
What are the best ways to socialize him with children then?
Yes, too much stimulation all at once. Plus there’s the potential not only to pick up disease as the first answer said, but he could escape, get hurt, or eat some dropped chocolate- which is very toxic.
There will be plenty of other opportunities to walk him at a park, etc after he’s had his whole set of puppy vaccinations.
I dont think its a good idea to let so many strangers touch and handle your pup.
Remmber they are visiting other homes that day, and may potentially be carrying diseases on their hands/clothing/shoes that could be passed on to your pup.
There are better ways to socialize your pup with children.
ADDED
You find more controlled situations.. let him play with friends and family’s children. When he is fully vaccinated you can go to the park.
ya put him in another room while their are large numbers of people around
i agree that this could be overwhelming and potential dangerous. Especially if your pup is not fully vaccinated. For example, if someone has had a dog in their home that had parvo. The parvo can live in that persons home for one year and can be carried even on shoes!
Try setting up a play date with a friends dog that is vaccinated and healthy. Once the pup is vaccinated you have a lot more freedom and opportunity to social him. 8 weeks is just a baby.
Congrats on your pup!
I’m sure you want your puppy to be social with people large and small but Halloween might not be a good time as kids are excited and tend to be loud . More importantly they might be tempted to share their candy with him and that could spell disaster!
Take him around kids, but don’t put him in a situation where there are BUNCHES of small children who may not how exactly how to react around dogs. Do you know any kids? Take him around them first, get him used to the idea of children. And then slowly introduce him to the world via walks (after all shots of course…not before)
Give him time. Its not hard to socialize an animal
Your pup may feel very overwhelmed if there are several strangers trying to pet him, and especially in his home.
Once he is fully vaccinated, taking him to the park or other dog suitable places (like pet stores) will get him around other dogs and people.
NO! They are going to be excited and loud and wearing costumes, do you really think it’s a good idea to expose your puppy to that? Really?
Poor little thing would be traumatized. IT’S A BABY. Treat it with the compassion you should give a baby.
He can get to know children a little at a time and under close supervision, not crowds of noisy kids in costumes.
Halloween night is very dangerous for animals. Strangers coming to the door dressed in strange costumes (which dogs don’t understand at all) could bring out fear aggression. Your pup is not fully vaccinated don’t introduce to children who may be carrying anything from their unvaccinated dogs. It is much better for you to put your dog in a quiet room for the night.
