Austin Zoo and Animal Shelter
The Austin Zoo is home to over 100 species of animals, and more than 300 animals living in the zoo. The zoo is located west of Austin on Rawhide Trail, which is emerging out of the Highway 290 west, shortly after its intersection with Highway 71 west on Thomas Springs Road, which intersects with Rawhide Trail a few miles down the road
The Austin Zoo includes educational institutions and beautiful gardens and habitats of bears, lions, and many exotic birds and reptiles. A petting zoo allows visitors to have a close contact with the species of harmless animals, and customers can buy food at a nominal cost to interact more closely with animals, a special treatment for children visiting the zoo.
The main objective of the sanctuary is to provide emergency relief, rehabilitation and education to help the animals at the zoo. The zoo had over 200,000 visitors last year, and is a popular destination for families in the Austin area. Originally Austin Zoo was a goat ranch, but in 1990 changed its name to Good Day Ranch, and at that time, the animals consisted mainly of deer, goats, donkeys, ponies, pigs and, with some exotic animals.
The zoo is open daily 10:00 to 6:00 pm, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and admission is $ 7.00 for adults and $ 4.00 for children, with discounts for seniors, students and military personnel, so the zoo is quite affordable for the whole family. annual passes for unlimited visits also are available to individuals and families, and earnings are going to provide more housing for the many stray animals that the zoo is regularly inundated with requests to save all animals, domesticated or wild.
Among the animals at the zoo are big cats such as lions, panthers, tigers, jaguars and, with the Old World and New World monkeys, as they are classified, and amphibians such as toads, frogs, salamanders, etc. There is also a habitat that includes iguanas reptiles snake geckos and turtles, exotic birds and different, including a beautiful peacock walking on the ground. It is also a sanctuary for unwanted animals and unusual lot of which were rescued from those who want more, such as llamas, pigs and miniature donkeys, and Longhorn cattle.
Austin Zoo maintains a preschool television called "Sprout Please!" which provides educational content for young children, and the zoo is also helping to promote an appearance Animal expert Jack Hanna, who will appear at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin in early October to discuss their experiences with wild animals. Another annual event called Zoo Boo at the Zoo, taking place during Halloween week for children with their parents to visit the zoo in costume and have a fair chance to see the animals and ride on a train "haunted."
The zoo is kept in the dark during these nights of fun and parents are invited to bring flashlights to look into the cages and habitats, although some overheads will be provided. Picnics are welcomed during the Halloween events and activities promise fun for all.
