Pinky, A Moluccan Cockatoo Parrot, Gets A New Blue Sock Dress

(voice over version coming soon) Pinky, a 20-something moluccan cockatoo, is a permanent resident of The Lily Sanctuary, a parrot rescue in Southern California. She was a self-mutilator for many years before she came to the sanctuary. She had plucked out all the feathers she could reach until she was nearly naked. She would tear at her tummy with her beak when she felt anxious, thus a large scab never healed. Pinky recently had surgery, and the result is miraculous. Dr. Scott Weldy was able to remove the scab and stitch her up. Just a few months later she is completely healed and you can barely see the scar. After her surgery Lily Sanctuary volunteers started making beautiful sock dresses that are warm and soft. We never dared cover her before the surgery because she easily breaks the few feathers that grow on her body, many of which are blood feathers. It is risky to handle her but we had to change her dynamic when she was bandaged after surgery. The little girl surprised us; once she adapted to her bandage her world changed and she got into her girlie wardrobe! She was fitted with a not so elegant but effective foam collar covered in duct tape that prevents bending her neck enough to pick at her tummy. OMG!! Pinky is being soooo good about being so handled. To think that until just the year she was barely touchable except on her head to get her scratchers. She could so tear up some fingers, and she just chooses not to I just love that little Pinky bird. .
